Group Training

What is Group Training?

Many new apprentices are employed under group training arrangements. Being employed in a group training company simply means that the person you are working for on the job pays a group training company for your services rather than paying you directly. The group training company then pays you – at exactly the same rate of pay as if you were paid directly.

Technically your employer is the group training company, because they're the one paying your wages. Your boss on the job is your 'host employer'.

What are the benefits of Group Training?

You can be sure that your training is matched to industry requirements and gives you a national qualification. Group Training staff manage and monitor your training in the workplace and with the training provider to make sure you receive relevant training in a safe environment, and provide ongoing support to handle any problems that may come up.

At the completion of your apprenticeship or traineeship, Group Training can help you find ongoing employment.

Group Training Companies can also be an excellent source of information on the occupations they cover. They can tell you what the job involves, what training is required, and the personal qualities you’ll need to have.

  • If your host employer cannot provide the required scope of work experience, the Group Training Company is able to place you with another host, either on a short-term or a long-term basis.
  • If your host employer can no longer afford to employ you, the Group Training Company will seek out another host as an alternative
  • For the host employer there is an added incentive in that the Group Training Company assumes responsibility for payment of wages and statutory oncosts (ie superannuation and workers compensation), group tax and the issue of group certificates, and maintains personnel records. The charge-out rate includes a fee for these services.

A national network of over 120 Group Training Organisations employs almost 40,000 apprentices and trainees throughout Australia. They are active in just about every industry - from careers in hospitality / tourism, automotive, electrotechnology, engineering, construction, business services, retail through to childcare, horticulture, real estate, sport and recreation, security, printing and graphic arts.
