Bechtel women win top national awards
A NEWLY-formed group that helps women understand their potential in the construction industry has won the top award at the QLD National Association of Women in Construction awards
Women@Bechtel chair Kristin Meikle and Bechtel Gladstone community relations manager Mellissa Case took home awards at the NAWIC awards night on Friday.
Gladstone-based community relations manager Mellissa Case also took out an award for community engagement.
The Women@Bechtel Gladstone Chapter took out the Crystal Vision Award for Advancing and Furthering the Interests of Women in the Construction Industry.
Mrs Case received the Seymour Whyte Award for Achievement in Marketing, Community Engagement and Communications Excellence.
Through her engagement plan, which she said was a collaborative effort, Ms Case provided a united front in the community to proactively manage the social impacts of large scale construction.
Her work has attracted global attention within the business for demonstrating the value and importance of reputation management to mitigate risks during construction.
"We work with the LNG companies to engage in non-traditional ways," she said, which includes the Bechtel Gladstone Facebook page and construction cruises.
"They were out of the box ideas about making it fun to learn more about LNG."
Mrs Case has also shot, produced and edited a number of popular videos on the Curtis Island construction.
"It's nice to sit back and reflect on what you can achieve," she said.
The Women@Bechtel group mentored Mrs Case and have helped many more women on the projects.
Women@Bechtel chair Kristin Meikle said the Gladstone chapter was the first to kick off in January this year, as it had the highest contingency of Bechtel employees in the one location.
"We kicked off to promote a more inclusive environment for women in the company," she said, adding that men were also welcome.
"We had to ensure women were getting opportunities and the tools to develop their careers."
She said it wasn't just social networking, but ensuring broader connections were made with all levels of staff and management.
"It's woman-focussed because we see a defined need, but it can make a better Bechtel and a better industry," she said.
"We have a finite period to be active so we want to make sure the good things get transferred within Bechtel to be taken elsewhere."comments powered by Disqus
