NAWIC October National Broadcast

October 29, 2014

A message from our National Leadership

October was another busy yet successful month on the NAWIC front!!

As you know, October is a month that hosts Mental Health Week as well as Australian Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Next month is Movember. All of these activities help bring awareness to some topics that make us feel very vulnerable and which are very difficult to deal with. Having said that, having a conversation about any these topics is not only considered good leadership but also helps form a more solid safety and wellbeing culture, which is part of the NAWIC values which make up our strategic framework. We participated in some events which brought out a number of good discussions in this space.

October also marked the completion of all the NAWIC award celebrations. Although the awards nights tend to have “a personality of their own” in each State, some things that were the same everywhere were that all the nominees we met demonstrated true inner-strength, integrity, courage and resilience. So please wear your award nominations/wins with pride. NAWIC and the industry as a whole are proud to celebrate your successes with you.

This month NAWIC attended the launch of the Workplace Gender Equity Agency (WGEA) “In your hands” campaign in the capacity of official supporters. This is all in support of reaching NAWIC’s vision which is to build a better future through the involvement and contribution of women in the construction industry by championing and empowering women in the construction and related industries to reach their full potential.

We look forward to seeing you at all the activities being held in all the states to round out the year. Take care of yourselves as we are now in the full throws of the construction “silly season”.

NAWIC’s mission is to champion and empower women in the construction and related industries to reach their potential.

Leadership Team - Catriona Smith VIC/TAS Chapter President

Every year the NAWIC Victoria and Tasmania Awards for Excellence are a highlight of the Construction Industry Calendar, and 2014 awards were no exception. Held on Friday 24th October, our MC Dave O’Neill and the 2014 Awards Committee welcomed 500 guests to the Grand Hyatt Melbourne to celebrate women in our industry.

The huge number and quality of nominations this year was really a testament to the quality of the women we have in the Construction Industry, and the all of the people around them who support and nurture their careers to allow them to achieve the potential we saw on Friday evening. As was mentioned several times throughout the evening, everyone in the room was a winner just for being nominated. It was a wonderful night to experience.

Being in the room with such energy and enthusiasm, it was an inspiration to hear about the amazing achievements of women from a large array of fields, and to hear about the dedication to advancing women and women’s opportunities for Leadership and Advancement in a challenging industry both on and off the stage.

We were particularly privileged to be joined by The Honourable Heidi Victoria MLA, the Minister for Women’s Affairs, who was kind enough to give us some insight into some of the initiatives currently being implemented as a part of her portfolio in Victoria. The Minister had some fascinating insight and we thank her immensely for donating her time to attend the evening.

During the evening the International Women’s Day Research Scholarship Auction was held for the beautiful designer chair generously donated by CULT. $4,500 was raised after an exciting auction for the scholarship. Thank you to Harcourts Croydon for conducting the Auction.

We could not possibly hold such a wonderful event without the support of our sponsors. Thank you to all of our major and supporting sponsors. Your ongoing commitment to NAWIC and the awards is greatly appreciated and ensure that we can continue to nurture Women’s Advancement and Leadership.

Thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate on Friday night, we look forward to seeing you in 2015.

Photos and winners are listed on the website.
